‘Students of the Month’ for September

By Linda Lou Lamb

The Benson High School ‘Students of the Month’ for September were announced at the Benson Public Schools’ governing board meeting on Monday, September 7th, by high school principal Ben Rodriguez.   The character trait for September 2013 was respect.  Students receiving this award were freshman Adriana Figueroa, sophomore Jake Thoutt, junior Christian Frazier, and senior Preston Sweatt.

“Adriana goes out of her way to say hi to her instructors,” Adriana’s freshman mathematics teacher Brenda Kurtz said.  “She is always polite when addressing teachers as well as her peers.”  Adriana enjoys culinary classes, is a member of the Benson Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and in her spare time she enjoys riding horses.  Adriana is the daughter of Anna Figueroa and Juan Figueroa.

“Jake is quiet and respectful,” Jake’s sophomore English teacher Eric Grizzle said. “His dealings with his teachers and other students are fair and mature.  He treats others, I believe, as he likes to be treated.”  Jake is a member of the Bobcat basketball and golf teams, and in his spare time he enjoys playing video games and sports with his friends.  Jake is the son of Jennifer and Eric Thoutt.

“Christian is a great kid,” Christian’s junior American History teacher Tom Poirier said.  “He is very respectful and friendly.  He embodies what we are looking for in a Benson High School student.”  Christian is a member of the Benson Future Farmers of America (FFA), the Book Club, the prom committee, and is a Boy Scout.  In his spare time he enjoys showing livestock and bee keeping.  Christian is the son of Gloria and Tim Frazier.

“Preston’s modesty and reticence are a happy example of what America can produce,” Preston’s senior science teacher Rob Purington said.  “Some succeed with great talent, but some, like Preston, with great and quiet effort.”  Preston is a member of the Benson High FFA and SkillsUSA Engineering.  In his spare time he enjoys showing animals.  Preston is the son of Jayne and Greg Sweatt.

The Benson High School ‘Student of the Month’ quality for October is citizenship.
