Benson High School Students of the Month – December 2013

By Linda Lou Lamb

Benson High School honored four students (freshman Morgan Tamez, sophomore Lofton Thomas, junior Amber Gardner, and senior Cody Wilson) with the ‘Student of the Month’ award for December 2013 under the category of diligence - careful and persistent work and effort.

Freshman Morgan Tamez is a member of the Bobcat dance and cheer team.  “Morgan turns in assignments on time and does an excellent job on all tasks assigned,” freshman English teacher JoAnne Ellsworth said.  Morgan is the daughter of Junior and Marla Tamez.

Sophomore Lofton Thomas is a member of the football, basketball, and track and field teams, the Future Farmers of America, Skills USA, and the Book Club.  “Lofton puts much effort into his school work and everything outside of school.  He has great diligence,” construction teacher Randy Barney said.  Lofton is the son of Shannon and Jennifer Thomas.

Junior Amber Gardner participates in softball, is the junior class secretary, and is a member of the International Club, the Book Club, and the National Honor Society.  “Amber is diligent in getting her work done,” graphic art teacher Adam Gilbert said.  “She looks at PowerSchool every day and can tell you all of her assignments in all of her classes.  If she doesn’t know how to do something, she will take the initiative to ask for help.” Amber is the daughter of Richard and Heather Gardner.

Senior Cody Wilson participates in soccer and basketball. “Cody is very caring and persistent in all he does,” physical education teacher Steve Rennie said.  “He has overachieved in sports because of this.”  Cody is the son of Yogi and Kelly Wilson.

The January 2014 ‘Student of the Month’ quality is leadership.
