Academic Decathlon Team w/Sponsor Mr. PoirierBy Linda Lou Lamb
The Benson High School Academic Decathlon competed in a mini-scrimmage at Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson on Thursday, September 26th.

Over 130 students from Benson, CDO, Marana, Sunnyside, Mountain View, Walden Grove, Amphi, and Buena competed in the scrimmage. This years’ academic decathlon topic is World War I; participants tested in art, economics, and social science of WWI.

“I am very pleased with the initial results from our first mini-scrimmage,” Benson High School Academic Decathlon coach Tom Poirier said. “The kids work very hard in class and try their best to master the material. I think we have a strong team this year, anchored by some veterans that have competition from the past two years.”

Placing in the honors level competition for the ‘cats were: senior Melissa Bachtel 4th in economics; senior Nathan Lindsey 4th in social studies; and junior Katherine Trepanier 5th in economics. Placing at the scholastic level were: senior Ashley Shivvers 3rd in art and senior Sarah Harper 3rd in economics. At the varsity level, senior Edgar Plett placed 2nd in social science,3rd in economics, and 4th place overall.

“Building an Academic Decathlon program takes years,” Poirier said. “There are plans in place to have an Academic Pentathlon (5 event) program in the Benson Middle School – hopefully up and running next year. This will allow the high school to have a constant influx of Benson students who know what the program is and who will have experience being involved in the program from the middle school.”

The decathlon team will be competing again in a multi-team meet on Thursday, November 7th at Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson – the topics will include science, music, language, and literature of WWI.
